Emergency Couple - Ana's thoughts on the very emotional episode 16 and 17

To the people closely following emergency couple and saw the scene of the picture above in the preview for ep16, aren’t you glad that it’s just Chun Soo’s fantasy. Episode 16 and 17 of Emergency Couple made me cry a whole lot. So if there’s anything at all in these two episodes that made me happy, it is when I confirmed that  the kiss above did not happen for real.

So what made it so sad?

Sickness and death are always equated with sadness not only in K dramas but in real life. In episode 16 and 17 we saw our lead Chang Min struggle to keep his father alive but fail in the end. For Chang Min, knowing that his father was sick was already painful but realizing that his father has been sick for a long time without them knowing about it makes it more sad and frustrating. I guess Chang Min’s mom echo his feeling of frustration. I could just feel for them in their scenes how they regret not knowing and not being able to do something early on.

Besides Chang Min and his mom, Jin Hee was also very sad. Her ex-father in law was like a father to her in the absence of her real dad who died when she was young. Her father in law was the one person who gave her strength when she got divorced with Chang Min and inspired her to become a doctor. But unlike Chang Min and his mom (since she is now divorced with Chang Min) she does not have any more right to act like a family and join them in their grief.

Can’t help but feel for Jin Hee and Chang Min when Tae Seok (Chang Min’s Dad) was being operated on and Jin Hee wants to stay and wait for results as well. Chang Min told Jin Hee  “ Don’t do this, I don’t want to make things harder for you as well, please go.” And then Jin Hee replies I’m sorry, I know that. I know it but I can’t go.”

The death scene was extremely sad with Chang Min trying to perform CPR, his mother not wanting the doctor to pronounce Tae Seok’s death and begging Jin Hee to do something to save her husband  trying to scold the doctors there of not being able to do anything….. I can feel for her being angry though we all know anger can’t do anything but somehow it is the first step in coping with the pain.

Another scene that was heart tugging was during the funeral and Jin Hee took it upon herself to help out in serving food and cleaning up. Chang Min’s mother (Yoon Sung Sook) and  his aunt saw her helping and approached her to tell her she need not be there and she  responds that it’s all she can do for the man who was so supportive of her.

Then Chang Min lead Jin Hee out and asked her to leave saying that he understands that she wants to help out but he does not know how to console her and Jin Hee responds that he is hurting more and she should be consoling him. Chang Min asked Jin Hee again to leave and invites her to just come as a guest next time. In that scene I could just feel Jin Hee’s conflict, the need to be there for her ex-husband and wanting to mourn the man who was like a father to her and the reality that she is not part of that family anymore.

The last scene that made me really cry in episodes 16 and 17 was when Chang Min went to Tae Seok’s (his dad) office to clean up and he saw in the desk calendar that his birthday was marked there.

He also found some newly purchased fishing equipments and he remembered that his dad asked him to go fishing with him one time but they were not able to go anymore. I can’t help but cry with Chang Min in that scene. I can just feel his regret and his pain.

Any nice things happening?

Of course there are nice things that happened in episode 16 and 17 .  If there’s anything good that results from death and sickness I think  it makes people rethink  their priorities, their goals and dreams. To most people the realization that death is something we will all face someday actually serves as an inspiration to be better and also, it has the power to bring people together.

Yong Gyu is finally pulling through. He almost gave up being a doctor and even succumb to alcohol after he got depressed when he gave a prescription that should not be taken with a medication that the patient  was currently taking resulting to  the patient condition worsening all because he did not check on the details carefully.  Yong Gyu is now better and was transferred to another department  since the other doctors saw that he needs to stay away first in the emergency department to heal himself up. Also it helped that Arum encouraged him to get better. Love or at least crushes can still inspire people to be better.

Chun Soo got suspended from punching a senior doctor, you might be wondering why this is good eh. Well the man needs to rest, even when he is living on instant ramyun while on vacation at least this suspension gave him his much needed rest and maybe also makes him rethink his priorities. Plus it earned him a visit from Jin Hee. His actions when he learned Jin Hee was going to visit him were just too cute. He was running around, cleaned up the house (or at least tried to tidy up his place) shaved  and even got a cut on his cheeks because he was sort of freaking out since Jin Hee is visiting him.

I may not  like Jin Hee to end up with Chun Soo but you have to admit that he is cute and nice and very smart besides being driven. If only Chun Soo will notice that Ji Hye still likes him and is silently waiting for him on the side…

Tae Seok being able to express his love for Chang Min and Jin Hee to be together before passing away. I think that Tae Seok being able to say it out loud with the two present is important so that they know that in spite of  Chang Min’s mom being so against their relationship, they had the dad watching them on the sidelines and tried to cheer them on.

Jin Hee’s mom visiting Tae Sook’s wake with Jin Hee. This scene was sort of a healing scene between the two families. It was refreshing to watch them in an adult conversation with Jin Hee’s mom trying to say a few words to inspire and console Chang Min’s mom  when in the past they could not even be in a room together without shouting at each other.

Jin Hee taking care of Chang Min when he was sick.

This time it’s Jin Hee’s turn to take care of him. I like seeing her  up on her toes to care for him in episode 17 since she was the one who was holding back on the past episodes when Chang Min was ready to get back together. This scene just gave fans like me a  little ray of hope that there might still be a chance for them to be together.

What do I hope to see in the next few episodes?

Emergency Couple will be getting an extra episode meaning instead of it running for 20 episodes , we are given one more as a bonus. Hopefully the bonus episode will help the production team tie up all the loose ends and give us a very satisfying ending. So here are a few of my hopes:
  1.  I hope that Sung Sook (Chang Min’s mom) will finally accept Jin Hee and realize her worth.
  2. Again, I hope that Ji Hye and Chun Sook will end up together.
  3.  I hope that Arum will get over her crush on Chang Min and will see how nice Yong Gyu.is.
  4.  Lastly (for now it’s all that I can think of hehe) I am still hoping that the next few episodes will give  Chang Min and Jin Hee a chance to work out their differences, heal their past hurts and just make out  ooops I mean kiss and make up and be reunited as a couple.

I know most of Emergency Couple fans echoes my hope to see a reunited Chang Min and Jin Hee at the end of the show. So can anyone direct Jin Hee's heart to the right direction please.....
